CitWR Volunteer Day at Food4Vets 12-18-2020

What an amazing day we had! A group of about 25 or so Cocktails in the War Room ‘Family’ members took the day yesterday, to head to Foxboro, and pack food boxes for the Food For Vets Program at the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation! Each box is filled with enough shelf stable food for 3 meals a day for 2 people, for 2 weeks!!! We met just after 9am, and went through the training to see exactly how the boxes needed to be filled. Some ‘War Room’ staff started putting empty boxes together, some were on restocking duty, to make sure the box packers had everything they needed, and some sealed and stacked the packed boxes. The rest of us took out carts, and went down the line packing 4 boxes at a time. We packed juices, cereals, canned meats and veggies, pasta and sauce, rice and snacks, all ingredients for well balanced meals that the dietician ay the Home Base Program put together to make sure our veterans were getting nutritious meals in every box. We worked together, as a team, people that have only met through Cocktails in the WarRoom and had never seen each other in person. Total strangers who are now a ‘family’ through a shared experience, and the will to give back. We wore our CitWR shirts and Santa hats, we were a force to be reckoned with!

The volunteers there told us that fewer people are volunteering to help, because of fears of the virus, buts we found it easy to stay separated, and safe in the 150,000 square foot warehouse that has been donated by the Kraft family next to Gillette Stadium. Music blaring, heckling and joke making, we even stopped to have a socially distant lunch of pizza before finishing the 402 boxes we packed start to finish. We worked hard, and cleaned up after ourselves, and left just after 3pm feeling like we had done something worth while. It’s easy in todays Covid-19 world to feel like you can’t do anything to help, to feel isolated, to have depression and loneliness creep in, but yesterday all of that went away in a few hours. It was the best medicine money can’t buy!

I can think of no better way to get your family, co workers, of friend groups together, in a safe way, to feel like you are still part of something special. You can register to volunteer online here, and I promise you, you will leave tired, but feeling better than when you got there! Thank you to my CitWR family, you guys are amazing!!! I can’t wait to do it again!!!

If you are a veteran, and in need of food assistance, please click here and find out where and when you can get access to these boxes! We packed them with love for you! Thank you for your service! There are food locations in Danvers MA, Devens MA, Foxboro MA, Falmouth MA, Haverhill MA, Manchester By The Sea MA, Natick MA, Orleans MA, Sandwich MA, Springfield MA, Worcester MA, and  West Barnstable MA!
